Getting Started

Creating an account

Sign up with your email address and choose a password. Once confirmed, you can start archiving immediately. No credit card required to get started.

After signing up, you will land on the dashboard where you can create your first archive and explore the available features. Your profile is automatically set up with default preferences that you can customize later in Settings.

Your first archive

There are two ways to archive a page:

  • Use the dashboard — paste any URL into the quick archive field and choose your formats.
  • Use the browser extension — click the Backdrop icon while browsing any page to archive it in one click.

Archives are private by default. You can share them later by adding them to a public collection. Each archive can include up to four formats: the full HTML page, a PDF version, a screenshot, and a readable text view.

Dashboard overview

Your dashboard shows your recent archives, storage usage, and quick stats. From here you can access all your content using the sidebar navigation:

  • Archives — browse and manage every page you have saved.
  • Collections — group related archives into folders.
  • Annotations — review all your highlights and notes.
  • Screenshots — browse captured screenshots with annotations.
  • Entities — see tagged people, places, organizations, and topics.
  • Library — upload and organize images, documents, audio, and video.
  • AI Chat — ask questions about your archived content.
  • Search — find anything across your entire archive.

Understanding plans

Backdrop offers different plans with varying limits on archives, storage, team members, and features. You can start on the free plan and upgrade as your needs grow. Check the Billing section for plan details and comparisons.

Your current plan and usage are always visible in the dashboard sidebar. You will also see a banner when you approach or exceed your plan limits.

Browser extension

The Backdrop browser extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave. It adds a toolbar button that lets you archive the current page, capture a screenshot, or save content as a PDF — all without leaving the page you are on.

The extension also supports selecting text to highlight and tag entities, and it provides access to your archives directly from the popup menu.
