About Backdrop
Backdrop is a web archiving and knowledge management tool that lets you capture any webpage in full fidelity — HTML, PDF, screenshot, and readable text — then annotate, organize, and search everything you've saved.
We started Backdrop because the tools for saving the web haven't kept up with how people actually use it. Bookmarks break. Read-it-later apps lose content. Screenshots sit in folders. We wanted something that treated web content as seriously as a personal library — permanent, organized, and searchable.
Our values
Preservation first
The web changes constantly. Pages disappear, links rot, content gets edited. We believe important information should be preserved in full fidelity — not just bookmarked.
Privacy by default
Your archives are yours. Everything is private unless you choose to share it. We don't sell data, mine your content, or show ads.
Built to last
Every archive is stored in four independent formats. If one format becomes obsolete, your content survives in the others. Your data is portable and never locked in.
Tools for thinking
Archiving is just the beginning. Annotations, entities, collections, and full-text search turn saved pages into a living knowledge base that compounds over time.
